No estoy segura.
Quedé enganchada a ellas! Ahora tengo unas cien plantas
Mis suculentas me hacen feliz y me transmiten paz
Tienes alguna suculenta favorita?

Wonderful collection in Canada
When I meet Sue in Instagram, I was amazed by her stunning collection of succulents. And I wondered how can they survive in the cold and hard Canada winters? All we know, most of these plants come from hot and dry places. But as you can see if you visit her Instagram account, @succulentsuz, she has all kind of beautiful and healthy succulents and she loves to propagate them as well.
Sue is a lovely and kind lady that enjoys taking care of her succulents and sharing her passion with other people. I am really happy to have connected with her.
I really appreciate her time to answer all my questions and to share with all of us her experience and her knowledge. Thanks so much, dear Sue!
You live in Ontario (Canada) where, during winter, temperatures fall below zero degrees Celsius and there are few hours of sunlight. How can succulents thrive in this climate?
Canadian winters are long, hard and quite cold. All of my plants and succulents come inside around mid October and I’ll bring them outside again around the beginning of June. They all huddle on every windowsill in my house and I do use a few grow lights to keep them happy! I watch them all lose their colors and turn a lovely shade of green over the winter. They have only 4 months of fresh air. My only succulents that survive the winter are the cold hardy Semperveriums. It’s so exciting to see them peep through the snow in springtime. Quite amazing that they thrive in such a cold climate.
Which is the lowest temperature that you reach in winter season?
Winter can be quite brutal. This year we have had snow mid November and the temperatures have been around -5C in the daytime, -15 at night so far on average. During January and February we have temperatures in the -25C range with lots and lots of snow! The issue also in winter is that the sun rises around 730 and starts to set at 4 so sunlight is minimal even on a bright sunny day.
During summer, can your succulents live outdoors?
Summer is wonderful where I live! I live just north of Toronto, Ontario on Lake Simcoe. Temperatures are in the 25-30 degree C range. My succulents all go outdoors and thrive on the shelves my husband built for them on our deck.
Is it easy to find nurseries specialized in these kind of plants in Canada?
We have many nurseries here to buy succulents and a few in southern Ontario that specialize in succulents and cacti’s. I think they are the ones that supply most of the different nurseries.
Would you say in Canada succulents are well known? Are they plants that typically people have at home?
Not too sure if in Canada succulents are well known. They did come into style a few years back so I believe that is when they became more popular. I don’t have too many friends that have them in their homes but I’m sharing my passion with everyone I meet and they all receive a succulent gift from me.
When did you start your succulent collection?
My succulent collection started about 3 years ago. I went with my daughter to our local nursery to make plant thank you gifts for my husbands clients. He is in the building business. My daughter suggested that I make succulent planters so we set off to buy a bunch of colorful succulents. The rest is history! I was hooked! I now have several 100 plants.
And why did you choose these kind of plants?
Succulents are just so appealing. They were different, colorful and all the rage in all the home magazines ! Each and every one was beautiful and unusual
What represents for you the time you spend gardening?
I spend a lot of my time gardening and fussing over my plants. Cutting, propagating, repotting, rearranging and checking for those pesky mealies . I have 5 children whom all have left the nest so I now have time to enjoy my own passions. If you ask anyone in my family, they would all say “she spends way too much time” lol!! At least an hour a day and on the weekends it could be most of the day. My succulents make me happy and give me peace.
I think you like water propagation; is it your favourite way to propagate your succulents?
Propagation is fun and I like to try different methods. Water propagation is fun and they look beautiful in the glass vessels but I also have leaves on all kinds of window sills, in soil, on rocks and in planters. I just can’t throw a single leaf away!
Do you have a favourite succulent plant?
My favorite succulent has to be Sedum morganianum. I think it’s had the most success for me and I even had blooms this past summer. My concrete face planter is by far my favorite.
Any advice for beginners in this succulent world?
Advice I’d give to beginners is to keep experimenting. We all have different conditions with weather, space, and time. Try and find what works for you and keep trying. As you have probably experienced, my friend, we all have overwatered or sunburned a few. Experience is what makes us learn and I definitely have a lot of learning to go.
Finally, you have an Etsy store. What can we find in it?
I set up my Etsy store after my daughters wedding this summer. I made 140 concrete planters from molds I purchased and planted them with around 25 different varieties of succulents. They were such a wonderful wedding favor for each guest to take home, and a huge hit that it inspired me to try and sell them.
Here you can see some of her collection, but I encourage you to visit her Instagram account and Etsy shop with her original planters. They are stunning!
